STEAM Magnet

MAGNET HISTORY

The Washington Preparatory High School Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics (STEAM) magnet program is located on the campus of George Washington Preparatory High school (WPHS).  As one of the oldest high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the school and the magnet program has a rich history and tradition of producing talented graduates.  The first magnet program at George Washington High School opened in 1981 with an emphasis in math and science.  The goal was to provide a rigorous college preparatory experience emphasizing math and science for inner city students.  In 1989, a second magnet opened on the campus with an emphasis in music, theater and the performing arts.  This year, we have one magnet program on the campus, the STEAM magnet.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

There are over two hundred and fifty magnet schools and magnet centers in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  By the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) guidelines, the STEAM magnet is a magnet center that shares the campus with the larger comprehensive high school, Washington Preparatory high.  The STEAM theme based magnet provides students with a basic introduction to and solid foundation in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics for all magnet students.  Our magnet students get to experience all of the positive educational and extra-curricular experiences offered on the larger campus within the context of a smaller nurturing learning community.  Magnet students are encouraged to take classes in conjunction with the local community college thus earning college credits while in high school.  We also have multiple extra-curricular activities that magnet students participate in to supplement their academic instruction, including sports teams, clubs, community/business partnerships, and internship opportunities that enhance the high school experience.
