Graduation Requirements

The Los Angeles Unified School District graduation requirements include completion of the minimum CSU “a-g” course requirements, the California Department of Education (CDE) requirements, and requirements set forth by the LAUSD Board of Education. The Los Angeles Unified “a-g” and the additional CDE and LAUSD course requirements require a passing grade of “D” or better for graduation eligibility. Additionally, students must earn 210 credits. Students must meet all requirements in order to earn a high school diploma.

Credits Required to Promote to the Next Grade Level

Grade level promotion is based solely on the numerical credits earned. In order to promote to the next grade level, students must earn the total number or credits required, as indicated in the chart above. 

Each semester, every course passed with a grade of “D” or better earns 5 numerical credits. (Algebra 1 is a year-long course which yields 0 credits for the first semester and 10 credits for the second semester). A total of 210 credits are needed to earn a high school diploma.
